THE WOLF GIRLS of Midnapore (West Bengal, India)

One of the most famous cases of wild children is, at the same time, an exception. Amala and Kamala were two girls found in Midnapore, in West Bengal (India) in 1920. They were living in a wolves's den when a missioner called J.A.L. Singh was informed by a native who was terrified about the existence of a "kind of gosht" in the forest and it needed an exorcism. When he Singh was trying to solve the mystery, he found two starving girls. the mother wolf defended them as if they were her own wolf cub. The wolf was killed by native people and the two girls, Amala and Kamala (3 and 6 years old) were taken to civilization.
It was supposed they were not real sisters (because of the difference of age), and there is one hypothesis which says that the wolf took them from anywhere at different times.
They didn't feel like humans and didn't allow other humans to touch, caress or just be near them.

They both were absolutely aggresive: they yelped, bit everything and everyone... and seemed to feel no human emotions, as they didn't smile, cry or give out any understandable sound in any human language.

Physically, their bodies, seemed to have suffered a sort of adaptation. for example, they had strong jaws and sharped teeth. The girls had their sight adapted to darkness and there was a frightening bright in their eyes.
They were sent to an orphanage and the other girls who lived there were really frightened of them. They couldn't developed the language or any communicative skills. Only one year after, the little Amala died, and it is said that her "big" sister cried for the first time. Her expression of pain was howling and howling, and the situation was really frustrating for the people who lived with her.
After this chapter, Kamala started a slight progression in communicative skills. She had a little notion of quantity and she learnt about forty words referring to objects of daily life of vital importance. Anyway, whe could never develop a language properly.
In 1929 she died because of the typhoid fever. She was buried with her sister.

  1. I have never imagine that wolfs could breed two humans and they could adapt to their special live, changing some of human´s characteristics like their jaws, their sight.
I always tought it only happends in tales and never in reality.

  2. Is amazing how a wolf can defend to two girls, who aren't her own species, and treat them like her own little wolfs.
It's normal that they were aggressive, because they were like a hunted wolf, because they felt like wolfs. They didn't know the human language, only wolf's language.
I think language acquisition in this case is very difficult to them because they have lived all her life wild.

  3. I think that this story is very similar to the film: Tarzan. A boy who is bringed up by wild animals and he speaks like them. But in this case are two girls: Amala and Kamala.
I like the story very much, but it unsets me pain because the girls have to live in an environment with a lot of people that they don't meet and are frightened of them. I think that Kamala is very brave. Because, when Amala die, she start to interact with the rest of people.

  5. I like this strange and frightening story. I can't believe yet that there were people so interesting and strange. I think that anyway, people should respect that girls because although they were different, they deserve to be treated well. They were humans too at least. But it's amazing that so strange things happend in our world.

I don't belive how these girls could survive with this type of life because they lived with a wolves. Is normaly that they were aggressive.
Also is incredible how the body of the girls was adapted to these circumstances because they have got sharp teeth like the wolves.

  9. I think that it's a very interesting story because it's very strange that two girls have survived living accompained by a wolf. It has influenced in their behaviour and in their physiology changing their teeth and their sight.
But in spite of everithing they have to be treated like human people even if they are differents. This story has surpised me.
